FLORES, RUGGED AND FASCINATING
Flores is a long, narrow mountainous island stretching over 350 kilometers and has an irregular coastline. It has a rugged dramatic landscape with majestic volcanoes, mountain lakes and a rich flora and fauna. There are good snorkeling and diving locations along the islands north coast, notably at Maumere and Riung.
More than 85% of its inhabitants are Roman Catholic. Traditional ceremonies and rituals are of both Catholic and animalistic backgrounds that include the awesome ritual whip fighting of Manggari, the solemn Catholic Easter festival in Larantuka, traditional boxing bouts called sagi or etu in Bajawa.
The capital of Flores is Maumere.
